Description
A small fragment of Mykhailo Bilas’s large appliqué “Vertep” (1990): a colorful star that illuminates a winter night where the nativity play comes alive. Not all the characters are here, but the spirit of the berda—the caroling troupe that went from house to house bringing joy, laughter, and a festive tale—lives in every point and color of the star.
Imagine the moment when children hide behind chairs and the Devil enters the home for his part in the performance. Or the first rays of the weary winter sun as the nativity troupe walks from house to house bringing glad tidings, and the hosts rejoice at their arrival, because the more carolers enter the home, the more generous the year will be.
This is not a copy of the original, but a small piece of what stands at its center—the Star, the light, and the nostalgia of a Ukrainian winter.
Created in collaboration with the Mykhailo Bilas Art Museum.
