David with the Head of Goliath Patch

A work by Oleksandr Roitburd in which a classical subject takes on a new, sharp, and contemporary resonance.

In 2019, the artist donated it to the collection of the Odesa Fine Arts Museum for its 120th anniversary—as a gesture of support, trust, and faith in the institution’s future.

The work is a postmodern reference to Michelangelo da Caravaggio’s painting “David with the Head of Goliath.” At its heart is the well-known biblical story of a shepherd who goes into battle against a giant. It is a story of unequal forces in which victory depends not on physical might but on determination, intelligence, and inner truth.

In Roitburd’s interpretation, the subject loses its heroic pathos and becomes more complex. Here, David is not a triumphant victor but a character burdened by victory. Goliath is not merely a defeated enemy but an image of a system, fear, and a past that must be carried along. It is a conversation about responsibility, the price of choice, and the fact that victory is not always a celebration.

We created this patch as a sign of dialogue between the classical and the contemporary, between art and the body, between image and everyday movement. It is not an illustration of the story but a fragment of it—a reminder of the moment when the weaker one dares to stand up, and the world can no longer remain as it was before.
