Lâle Patch

The patch’s name comes from the Crimean Tatar word “lâle” — “tulip.”

It is one of the symbols of Örnek, the traditional Crimean Tatar ornament inscribed in 2021 on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

In the language of Örnek, the tulip represents a young man. One who is growing. One who continues the journey.

Some cultures have passed their history down through books for centuries. Others learned to hide it in ornaments, so that even when they had to leave home, their memory would remain close.

Lâle is precisely about this. About generations of Crimean Tatars who did not allow their culture to disappear. About those who grew up far from Crimea but still knew where their roots lay. About those who continue to preserve the language, songs, traditions, and memory today.

We made this patch in blue and yellow. It is easy to see both the Crimean Tatar flag and the Ukrainian flag in them. Different flags, but one sky overhead. Different histories, but a shared belief that home is not merely a place on a map. It is what lives inside you and always leads you back.

The patch was created based on a work by Afize Yusuf-kyzy, a Crimean Tatar singer, glass-painting artist, civic activist, and former journalist for the ATR TV channel.
