Look at Me Patch, M
Description
The prototype for the patch was traditional Carpathian lizhnyky from the late 19th century, which are still woven in
the Carpathian foothills. The colors are reminiscent of Carpathian berries — blackberries, bilberries, raspberries, and mulberries.
A lizhnyk is a thick woolen carpet with a textured surface and a long, fluffy
double-sided pile. In Ukraine, they were woven in the highland Carpathian regions, where there were
enough pastures for sheep. The craft was practiced mainly by Hutsuls. For them, the lizhnyk serves not only a decorative and household purpose, but also a sacred one. It is also a talisman.
The technology for making a lizhnyk is extremely demanding. It all begins with raising a sheep, shearing its wool, cleaning the wool of natural grease and dirt, drying it, and spinning the yarn. Finished pieces need to be reduced in volume. To do this, woven lizhnyky are taken to a river fulling mill through which part of the river current passes. The stream strikes and pushes the piece, shrinking the lizhnyk to its usual size. This
process cannot be carried out in modern
machines, although such attempts have been made.
