Look at Me Patch, L
Description
The patch was modeled on traditional Carpathian lizhnyk blankets from the late 19th century, which are still woven in
the Carpathian foothills. The colors recall Carpathian berries — blackberries, bilberries, raspberries, and mulberries.
A lizhnyk is a thick woolen carpet with a textured surface and long, fluffy
double-sided pile. In Ukraine, they were woven in the high-altitude Carpathian areas, where there were
enough pastures for sheep. This craft was practiced mainly by Hutsuls. For them, the lizhnyk serves not only a decorative and practical purpose, but also a sacred one. It is also a talisman.
The process of creating a lizhnyk is extremely difficult. It all begins with raising a sheep, shearing its wool, cleaning the wool of natural grease and dirt, drying it, and spinning the thread. The finished pieces need to be reduced in volume. To do this, the woven lizhnyks are taken to a water-powered fulling mill on the river, through which part of the river current flows. The flow of water beats and pushes the piece, shrinking the lizhnyk to its customary size. This
procedure cannot be done in modern
machines, although attempts have been made.
