Tsesvit Patch
Description
This patch was inspired by a lizhnyk blanket by the Gushka brand. Its pattern, which remains popular among craftspeople, comes from the village of Babyn in Kosiv district. We named it Tsesvit because its different colors resemble the flags of countries around the world.
A lizhnyk is a thick woolen carpet with a textured surface and long,
fluffy double-sided pile. In Ukraine, they were woven in the high-altitude Carpathian areas, where there were
enough pastures for sheep. This craft was practiced mainly by Hutsuls. For them, the lizhnyk served not only a decorative and practical purpose, but also a sacred one. The lizhnyk accompanies Hutsuls throughout their lives — from their arrival in this world to the end of their earthly journey. Therefore, as a universal talisman, it is used in folk rituals. These include parents blessing their children for marriage, giving lizhnyks to newlyweds at a wedding, and using them in funeral rites.
Some scholars suggest that the sacrifice of linen or other fabrics in pre-Christian times was intended for ancestral spirits.
