Sorrow Has Passed Patch, M
Description
The prototype for the patch was a zaplavnyk carpet from the early 19th century from the village of Doroshivka, Yampil district, Vinnytsia region.
The original is kept in a private collection. The flower as the central symbol was first described in Olena Pchilka’s 1876 work “Ukrainian Folk Ornament.” This book was
devoted to embroidery, although several pages also describe carpet weaving.
Podillia is generally considered the oldest region in Ukraine where carpets are woven. This was discovered during archaeological excavations, which uncovered pottery of the Trypillia culture. After the ceramics were fired, they were placed on fabric woven using the “vichka” or “u zastup” method.
Carpets are still woven here using the same technique.
They are divided into three groups — the geometric group, an example of which we see now; the floral group, which is further divided into three types depending on the placement of the elements, namely “in a vase,” “repeat,” and “modern”; and a mixed group, which often depicts historical scenes and combines floral, zoomorphic, and geometric ornaments.
