A Courting Visit in Toronto Patch
Description
The image on this patch comes from a 1974 carpet woven in Canada by an ethnic Ukrainian,
Olenka Frantsuz.
Between 1891 and 1914, more than 170,000 Ukrainians, mostly from the Austro-Hungarian Empire, left their homeland. When emigrating abroad, they took household objects with them, as well as the skills to make them, and passed this knowledge on to future generations.
Today, our diaspora in Canada numbers more than 1.35 million. In major cities such as Winnipeg, Edmonton, and Toronto, there are Ukrainian museums, community organizations, and more than 300 Orthodox and Greek Catholic parishes around which the community gathers. Many fascinating Ukrainian carpets are preserved there.
The carpet’s historical name is “My Sheep, My Sheep.” It now belongs to the family of Tamara Ivanochko, director of the Ukrainian Museum in Toronto, Canada.
