Shadows Forgot Patch, M
Description
The prototype for the patch was a small tapestry from the late 18th century. Poltava-region carpets are easy to recognize by their floral ornamentation. They were very expensive because they were woven using the comb technique. This technique took a long time, but it made it possible to create highly complex and detailed patterns. Today, a carpet-weaving center that has existed since Cossack times remains in the village of Reshetylivka. The National Museum of the History of Ukraine even preserves a carpet from 1734 that was used at the burial of Ukrainian Hetman Danylo Apostol.
A characteristic feature of carpets from this region is floral ornamentation that is either monochrome or uses various shades of a single color. Sometimes stylized images of birds among branches and bouquets of flowers are incorporated into the ornamentation.
A 1968 Reshetylivka carpet by Nadiia Babenko is displayed in the lobby of the UN headquarters, while a carpet by Leonid Tovstukha has been kept in the Council of Europe hall in Strasbourg since 2005.
