Sorrow Has Passed Brooch
Description
The brooch was modeled on an early-19th-century zaplavnyk carpet from the village of Doroshivka in Yampil district, Vinnytsia region.
The original is kept in a private collection. The flower, as the central symbol, was first described in Olena Pchilka’s 1876 work “Ukrainian Folk Ornament.” This book was
devoted to embroidery, although several pages also describe carpet weaving.
Podillia is generally considered the oldest region of Ukraine where carpets are woven. This was established during archaeological excavations that uncovered pottery of the Trypillia culture. After firing the ceramics, they were placed on fabric woven using the “vichka” or “u zastup” technique.
Carpets are still woven here using the same technique.
They are divided into three groups — geometric, an example of which we see now; floral, which is further divided into three types depending on the arrangement of elements, namely “in a flowerpot,” “repeat,” and “modern”; and a mixed group, which often depicts historical scenes and combines floral, zoomorphic, and geometric ornaments.
